Engineering Technology Research & Promotion Center


The Centre was established on October 1, 2007. The mission statement is promotion for interdisciplinary technology research and development with a long-term goal . Second, we accept the commissioned project that government departments or private institutions plan to promote; at the same time to support the Dean to promote related research and development work. It's also contributing to the integration of the interdisciplinary science and technology of the nation, and the raising of academic standards.


Master’s Program in Telecommunication Engineering




In response to the rapid growth of telecommunication technologies and the increasing demand for telecommunication experts worldwide, the International Master’s Program in Telecommunication Engineering was established in 2014. Based on recent progress in  telecommunication technologies and the telecommunication industry, the program aims to foster telecommunication talent with a global vision. It is the first program of its type in Taiwan, and its students are divided into two groups, depending on their research interests. The System Group primarily focuses on signal processing technology in communication systems, whereas the Wireless Group focuses on training experts in communication transfer  technology. In addition to professional training, the program offers internship opportunities in telecommunication-related industries in Taiwan; experience gained from these internships can enhance students’ competitiveness in the job market after they have returned to their native countries.


Research Directions


The curriculum covers telecommunication systems and transmission techniques, arranges corporate visits, and offers internship opportunities to train experts who are proficient in theoretical knowledge and have practical experience. The research focuses of the aforementioned two groups under the program are described as follows:


System group:

Modern mobile technology, wireless sensor networks, machine learning, virtual reality, biometric, etc.

Wireless group:

Microwave circuits, antenna design, RF technology, electromagic compatibility, laser module packaging, etc.


In addition to training basic research capabilities in telecommunications, the program encourages students to participate in integrated research projects and inter-department projects to expand the depth and breadth of their academic vision.



Master’s Program in Electric Power Engineering




National Sun Yat-sen University and the International Cooperation and Development Fund launched the International Master’s Program in Electric Power Engineering in 2006. The program is a human resource development project that seeks to promote professional exchanges among international experts, share Taiwan’s experiences, facilitate globalization, and expand Taiwan’s international vision in the field of electric power engineering. The research and development capacity of the program’s faculty has consistently held a leading position in Taiwan; with this in mind, the program, which considers factors such as technical levels, supply and demand, international relations, and market competition, strives to train international research and development talent in electric power engineering to meet the demands for high-quality demands of a digitalized society.

Communications Engineering




Given Taiwan’s status as a major research and development center for communication equipment, talent in communications engineering is a crucial asset to Taiwan. The institute of Communications Engineering is an independent department that runs master’s and doctoral programs, which were established in 2001 and 2008, respectively. The institute has a distinguished and prolific faculty, including numerous professors who serve as editors of prominent journals, including a number of IEEE journals. Based on the research interests of the faculty members, the institute’s curricula emphasize two major domains, namely communication system technologies and electromagnetic wave and wireless communication applications. The institute pursues the educational goals of academic knowledge, professional skills, team spirit, independent thinking and research innovation, and international mobility to foster professional talent with theoretical knowledge and practical competency. Furthermore, the institute is a major research center of telecommunications in southern Taiwan.

Environmental Engineering




The master’s and doctoral programs of the Institute of Environmental Engineering were established in 1991 and 1997, respectively. The master’s program started to accept on-the-job students in 2001, and a specific curriculum for on-the-job students was established in 2013. These programs endeavor to train advanced experts and researchers in the fields of environmental science and engineering , to engage in basic research for the improvement of technical applications, to develop new technologies, and to promote continuing education and professional studies. Through continuing efforts of over two decades, the distinguished faculties and visionary research capabilities have garnered more than NT$10 million in research funds, as well as over NT$40 million worth of funds in the commissioned projects and industry–academia collaboration projects. In 2016, the department received a Science Citation Index of 4.38, thereby placing it at the forefront of research and education institutions in this field in Taiwan. Alumni can find employment in teaching facilities, public agencies, research institutions, and private consultant or technology companies, as some started their own businesses.

The Department of Photonics was founded in 1993 with the name “The Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering” from the very beginning. The research fields in DOP cover laser physics, optical semiconductor materials, organic materials, flat panel display, components and packaging, optical communication, and photonic system and application. The main objectives of the department include cultivating highly-trained professionals in electro-optical engineering and advancing the research capability of photonic technologies.  


During the first 15 years, the Institute of Electro-Optical engineering offers only graduate programs for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. In 2008, the Institute changed its name to “The Department of Photonics “ and started to offer undergraduate program.


The Department of Photonic enjoys high academic standing, and a strong and growing national reputation. In addition to the Top University Development Plan, we have accomplished major national projects, including the Promotion of Academic Excellence Program sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the Technology Development Program for Academia by the Ministry of Economic affairs.
